A new study that shows it’s possible to treat ADHD in adults, says that people can take medication to treat ADHD and ADHD symptoms. In one study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, researchers from the National Institute of Mental Health, found that adults who took the stimulant drug stimulants such as Adderall, Ritalin and Adderall XR (Adderall) had a significantly lower mean total ADHD symptom scores.
They found that adults who took the medication had the same total scores as those who were not taking the medication. And, those who took stimulant medication had a significantly lower mean total ADHD symptom scores compared with those who were not taking the medication.
“This is one of the first studies to show that stimulant medication treatment is an effective treatment for ADHD and ADHD symptoms in adults,” said lead author and professor of pediatrics at Harvard Medical School. “Our study provides evidence that people who took stimulant medication for a long time and took it for a long time may be able to treat their symptoms with medication.”
In the new study, Adderall, Ritalin and XR were found to be effective in treating ADHD in adults with the symptoms of ADHD. They were also the only stimulant medications to treat ADHD. These studies have been funded by the National Institute of Mental Health, the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, the New England Journal of Medicine, the National Institute on Drug Abuse, and the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke.
The stimulant medications used in this study were Adderall, Ritalin and Adderall XR. “We saw that the medication was more effective than stimulants and we saw a reduction in ADHD symptoms in the majority of the patients,” said lead author and professor of pediatrics at Harvard Medical School.
Adderall is approved to treat Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) in adults. It is a class of drugs known as norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (NRI). It is a non-stimulant medicine. Adderall is prescribed for people who are on stimulants, including those who are on NRI stimulants.
Adderall is also FDA-approved for treating attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in adults.
The study was funded by Eli Lilly and Company, and was reported in the New England Journal of Medicine earlier this year. In June, the drugmaker announced a $1.2 billion settlement with Eli Lilly and Company for the manufacturer of Adderall.
“I think people should be able to take Adderall and it should work,” said lead author and professor of pediatrics at Harvard Medical School. “This is the first study that shows that stimulants may be effective and that they are better than other drugs for ADHD symptoms.”
In the Adderall study, participants who took Adderall, Ritalin or XR were significantly less likely to have a lower mean total ADHD symptom scores compared with those who were not taking the medication. However, those taking stimulants had a significantly lower mean total ADHD symptom scores compared with those who were not taking the medication.
“We were able to demonstrate that these two medications are effective in treating ADHD in adults,” said lead author and professor of pediatrics at Harvard Medical School. “This was a real breakthrough for the drugmaker and it was also the first time we found that people who took Adderall for a long time and took it for a long time can be treated with medication.”
